[Facebook Advertising Series #4] There are many different ad types and formats for Facebook ad types. This flexibility allows the social media marketer to combine creativity with practicality in design, formatting, and ad specifications.

Facebook features multiple advertising types across Facebook, Instagram, Audience Network and Messenger. Each ad has two components: The format (what it looks like) and the placement (where it will be displayed).This section will explain in detail the various Facebook ad types and their specs, and how to choose the right ad type.

Facebook Ad Type #1: Boosted

Boosted Posts: They are a variation of traditional posts. If you are a Facebook Page owner, Facebook has a feature which allows you to increase your Facebook post to reach a broader audience. Clicking on Boost Post will bring up a screen where you can choose the audience you want to target and also bid prices, so you can promote your post on Facebook using their ad network. You can place it on mobile and desktop News Feeds, Audience Network, and Instagram.

Facebook Ad Type #2: Link Click

Link Click Ads: These are the most common type of Facebook ads. You can create this kind of advertisement to generate traffic for your website, blog, or even an affiliate site. The Link Click Ads can be shown on more than one News Feed to get your ad across to a much broader audience. Display options include Mobile and Desktop News Feeds, Instagram, and Audience Network.

Facebook Ad Type #3: Video

Video Ads: These are just like Link Click Ads, except that they contain a video instead of an image. Again, it appears on both mobile and desktop News Feeds, Audience Network, and Instagram.

Video File Size: maximum of 4 GB

Facebook Ad Type #4: Carousel/Card

Carousel Ads: This ad type displays a series of images, or videos, text and even links in just one ad set. The ads are shown in a scrollable layout.

For advertisers with multiple products to promote on Facebook, they offer a wide range of options for users to choose from, thereby increasing the conversion rate. Carousel ads appear on mobile and desktop Newsfeeds, Instagram, Right Sidebar, and Audience Network.

Facebook Ad Type #5: Slideshow

Slideshow: This type of ad allows you to create a looping video of up to 10 images. It is also great for advertisers that want to showcase more than one product to their audience.

Facebook Ad Type #6: Collection

Collection: The previous ad type Canvas (which allowed advertisers to create an interactive story by combining images and videos into a single ad set) has transformed into the new Collection format that enables advertisers to “feature a collection of items that open into a full-screen mobile experience.” The ads can only be displayed on mobile devices, in the mobile News Feed. The new ad type offers easy access to the advertiser’s products in an immersive and visually-appealing style!
